Electrofringe is a five-day festival of electronic arts and culture, committed to fostering creative and innovative use and re-use of technology and electronic artforms, while focusing on artistic development and skills exchange. The festival is now calling for proposals for the 2009 edition. Artists, sound artists, performers, media makers, digital filmmakers, researchers, cross-artform practitioners, curators, producers, writers, experimenters, are invited to apply.

Trans Artists has made a checklist for artists who are searching, applying and preparing for an international artist-in-residence program. This checklist will help you to match your wishes and expectations with those of the program you want to apply for, in order to save yourself unnecessary trouble and to avoid disappointment.
Motivations
To think about your motivation seems superfluous, but it is an absolute necessity. Many residential art centers have strong reasons for running their program. Therefore you have to think about the reasons why you want to stay and work somewhere else.
Making a choice out of more than 800 professional opportunities to search for in the Trans Artists database, can be quite a job. The following hints will help you to find your way.
Application procedures differ enormously. Each institute has its own policy of adjudication. Participation is planned a long time in advance, usually six months, sometimes years ahead. Therefore think about the following questions.
Of course a residency costs money. Some residency programs cover all costs, some residency programs don't cover any costs at all. In general, residential art centers will partly cover the costs, which always makes it necessary to find additional funding. Be sure about the budget before you go!
Fabrica Interactive now welcomes applications from young artists and designers to join Fabrica for a one year residency. You must be able to conceive, design, prototype and build engaging and innovative experiences. You will work with a multidisciplinary and multinational team of designers in Fabrica's research centre in Treviso, Italy.

"...During my 11 days residency at Steim I did a working prototype of the second incarnation of my speakingObject (no better title still). its basically a vocal synthesizer controlled by two buttons and a three axis accelerometer. it works without a computer. the two wires are just power and sound out. the finished object will work on batteries and include an amp plus speaker so there will be no wires at all. its basically software for a parallax propeller microcontroller that polls the accelerometer and maps the data into parameters for the vocal tract synthesis..."
Steim, Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, based in Amsterdam, is an independent live electronic music centre exclusively dedicated to the performing arts. Steim invites performers, musicians and visual artists for residencies and provides them with an artistic environment and technical facilities, through which concepts can be given a concrete form.

Eyebeam's Artist in Residence (AIR) Program is a multidisciplinary initiative that supports the development, creation and presentation of outstanding new works of art made with digital tools. Residencies give artists an opportunity to engage in an extended exploration of emerging technologies, inventing or refining technology relevant to future projects.
