Description
De Ateliers is an independent artists' institute which is run by visual artists. It focuses on the artistic development of young, talented artists from within the Netherlands and abroad. The monumental building in the center of Amsterdam offers twenty-three spacious studios. These are placed at the disposal of beginning artists who wish to combine intensive self-motivation with critical guidance. Though similar to a post-academic teaching facility, de Ateliers is not an educational institution. Its policy as a foundation is determined by the supervising artists. Throughout the working year, teaching artists and art critics make individual studio visits every Tuesday. The number and the duration of the visits varies from week to week. Every student has contact with every teacher; de Ateliers does not use sign-up lists for studio visits.

Studio Information
The studio spaces are seventy to one-hundred square meters in size. Most of them have tall windows facing northward. Each student receives a key to his or her own work space and a key to the building, so that it is possible to work there at any time. Beginning students are assigned a studio. After the first working year, they are given the opportunity to choose a studio. The use of the studio space is subject to regulations (such as the fact that the studio may not be used as living quarters).
Accommodation Information
De Ateliers assists students in finding a suitable place to live in Amsterdam. Six apartments in the center and several one-room apartments in Amsterdam-Noord are first offered to foreign students.
Paid by host
The stipend is appr. 9700 euro per year and covers basic living costs. A working period at de Ateliers involves no registration or tuition fees.
Paid by artist
Artists have to pay for their own living accomodation. The fee for the use of the studio is Euro 225,- per calendar year, this being subtracted from the stipend that de Ateliers grants to all participants.

De Ateliers is located in the center of Amsterdam, by public transportation about ten minutes from Centraal Station or thirty minutes from Schiphol Airport.

Application Criteria
De Ateliers is open to young artists who are at the beginning of their artistic development. Although de Ateliers does not impose a strict age limit, there is a preference for candidates up to (and including) twenty-seven years of age. They should have a good command of the English language. A completed course of training and professional experience are not required; applications are considered on the basis of visual qualities.
